Endorsements for Raise the Rates resolution in Ottawa, Guelph and Bracebridge
ACORN introduced the emergency resolution to raise the rates at the consultation in Ottawa on Tuesday evening and received overwhelming support. (See video here) and CBC article here.
The Guelph and Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination supported the resolution to raise the rates in their submission to the Ministry of Community and Social Services on the Basic Income pilot:
“While we are pleased by the Government of Ontario’s commitment to explore a Basic Income, the PTF joins in the frustration of other anti-poverty organizations at yet another cycle of consultations on poverty reduction. Honourable Hugh Segal’s Discussion Paper, Finding a Better Way: ABasic Income Pilot Project for Ontario, states, “it is hard to conclude that the income support that is now available for those living in poverty is adequate in any meaningful way.”
Thus, the PTF supports calls for the Government of Ontario to immediately raise the Ontario Works rate for a single individual to $1,320 per month and raise ODSP rates by at least $500 per month, irrespective of the Basic Income Pilot.) (See here.)
PROMPT (the Poverty Reduction of Muskoka Planning Team) endorsed the resolution to immediately raise the rates at their Annual General Meeting held on Thursday in Bracebridge. (See video here).
There are two consultation sessions left on the Basic Income – in Windsor and London. See details below. If you plan on attending please support the demand to increase social assistance immediately to the levels proposed by Senator Hugh Segal.
